Am I allowed to drive in Iran?
Travelers who are at least 18 years old and in possession of a valid national driver license are allowed to drive a car in Iran.
Direction of traffic and right of way
In Iran, road users drive on the right-hand side. If not regulated otherwise by traffic signs, priority to the right applies. In urban areas, as well as on rural roads you should show due consideration to pedestrians and cyclists. Pay special attention when approaching cross walks.
Seat belts fastened
It is mandatory for all passengers to keep their seat belts fastened while the car is moving in Interurban roads. Inside cities, seatbelts are mandatory only for front seat passengers.
Speed limits
The following are indications for the maximum speed on different road types and for different vehicles. The speed limit can, however, be regulated differently by means of traffic signs.
Freeway | 120 km/h |
Highway | 110 km/h |
Urban areas | 60 km/h |
Always heed the traffic signs and speed limits because the fines for violating them are very high.
Necessary documents and equipment
In order to drive a motorized vehicle in Iran you need a valid national driver license and the documents of the vehicle you are driving.
Driving while intoxicated
Alcohol and drugs are strictly forbidden in Iran and driving while intoxicated will result in a fine of 4.000.000 Rials (up to March 2017).
Driving during winter
It’s recommended, although not compulsory, in the winter, to use icebreaker tires. However, you must have wheel chains with you. You must take extra precaution since the roads in higher regions of Iran tend to freeze in the winter due to snow or cold weather.
NOTE: Turning right on crossroads is allowed only with traffic light commands.
